Project Overview

This project is a professionally designed recycling application that aims to provide efficient progress tracking and insights into environmental impact through a user-friendly interface. The pickup service has been carefully designed to be convenient, especially for busy individuals and those with limited mobility.

The main goal is to empathize with users and address the needs and challenges of busy workers, individuals with limited mobility, and people with challenges to participate in recycling activities. I am committed to improving their experience and finding effective solutions to meet their unique needs.

The Problem

In Korea, recycling methods differ for apartments and houses. Apartments use a centralized system with scheduled disposal, ensuring continuous disposal but causing inconvenience with sorting. Houses employ a mixed collection system, allowing disposal anytime; however, this poses challenges like difficulty in separating recyclables, aesthetic issues from accumulated recyclables, and practical difficulties related to stairs, especially impacting users with mobility issues, time constraints, or elderly individuals.
Design Challenge
How can users conveniently recycle without physical discomfort or time constraints?
The Solution
· Providing enhanced convenience through pickup services, users can monitor progress in real-time.

· The introduction of a reward system encourages proper sustainable recycling habits.

· Provide customized recycling information through image recognition to improve user understanding.

Simplified Pickup & Delivery Service

Recycling Pickup Appointment allows users to easily request and track the collection and delivery of separated recyclables to partner Zero Waste stores.

Easily identify and track recyclables

When uncertain about the recyclability of a product, the app allows users to take a photo, recognizing the item and providing information on its recyclability. Users can add this information to a list for future reference, ensuring easy accessibility at any time.

Reward

To actively encourage proper waste separation, incentives are provided.
Rewards can be utilized like commodities when shopping at affiliated zero-waste stores.
1. Discovery
Problem
Recycling issues in apartments and multi-family house
Apartment
Scheduled collection days require recyclables to be placed at a centralized location weekly, posing space constraints if missed. The intricate sorting of recyclables, particularly glass, plastics, and paper, presents challenges, including separating glass dishes and differentiating colored plastics. Elderly or physically challenged recyclers may find round trips challenging in the disposal process.
Multy-Family House
Improper recycling practices due to lack of dedicated facilities are an inconvenience. Lack of recycling facilities and oversight creates aesthetic issues, unpleasant odors, and illegal dumping concerns. In homes with stairs, elderly or physically challenged residents may have difficulty separating recyclables, reducing recycling efficiency.

User Surveys

Survey Questions

1. Current Satisfaction:  Please rate your satisfaction with the current recycling system in your residential area on a scale of 1-5.

2. Challenging Categories : Specify the most challenging recycling category and briefly explain why.

3. Inconveniences in Recycling : Share any inconveniences or issues you have experienced related to recycling.

4. Information Perception : Describe how you seek recycling information and your satisfaction with the process.

5. Facility and Support Opinions : Do you have any opinions or suggestions regarding the recycling facilities or support provided in your residential area?

6. Suggestions for Improvement : Share areas you believe need improvement and any ideas or suggestions you may have.

7. Environmental Awareness : Briefly discuss your personal level of environmental awareness and corresponding actions.

Participants
Outcomes
Participants emphasized the need for accessible and accurate recycling information, mentioning recycling challenges due to time constraints and physical limitations. They also emphasized the importance of technological support, such as application-based systems, to overcome physical constraints. Participants also called for autonomous scheduling options and pickup services to make recycling more efficient.

3. Develop

Design System

Based on the research findings, I have established the UI design for the app.

Low-Fidelity

Based on user research insights, I sketched out the UI design incorporating features such as booking pickup services, notification alerts for tracking pickups, searching for nearby Zero Waste stores, displaying recycling information by taking photos, adding items to a wishlist, and a feature to track the process of delivering recyclables to Zero Waste stores and receiving rewards.

4. Deliver

Prototype

The chosen shades of green are carefully selected to align with an eco-friendly image. Avoiding strong color contrasts, I aimed to keep the screen from becoming too complex, emphasizing key elements to focus the user's attention. The font hierarchy follows a simple design structure, promoting a consistent user experience throughout the app.

Recycling Pickup Appointment

Through this feature, users input collection information and make a pickup reservation.
If recyclables are placed outside the door, collectors will come to pick them up on the specified date and time.

Tracking shipment

After making an appointment, users can easily track the delivery process of recyclables using the tracking number. It can also send messages to the collector through the chat feature.

Find location
Entering user's home address will reveal the locations of nearby zero-waste stores.
Taking photos

If there is confusion about whether a particular item is recyclable, users can take a photo, and the app will scan the product to provide information on its recyclability and guidance on how to recycle it.

Reward

Once the items sent to zero-waste stores are verified, rewards are issued through the app to the user's ID. These points can be utilized at affiliated businesses.

Reflection | What I learned

1. I have realized the importance of User-Centric Design, where the design and features of the application are centered around providing a user-friendly experience. A convenient and intuitive user experience contributes to increased user satisfaction.

2. Implementing Convenient Features involves incorporating functionalities such as recycling pickup reservations, item scanning through photos, and rewarding users. This approach ensures that users are provided with an easy and efficient service.

3. Emphasizing Sustainability has been a key focus to raise awareness of environmental issues. Through collaboration with zero-waste stores, providing information on recyclability, and promoting the reduction of plastic usage, the app offers opportunities to contribute to sustainability.

4. Tech and Social Responsibility have been highlighted in app development, providing an opportunity to emphasize social responsibility regarding environmental issues and spreading awareness. Simultaneously, recognizing the importance of using efficient and innovative technology to address problems has been a key learning point.
